With Lok Sabha elections on mind, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati reshuffled her Cabinet here on Thursday. While the status of two ministers of state was elevated, two new faces were inducted.
Those who were promoted to Cabinet rank are Fateh Bahadur Singh from Paniyara (Maharajganj) constituency and Ram Het Bharti from Hargaon (Sitapur) seat, holding independent charge of Minister of State for Forest and Election Departments respectively. The new faces in the Cabinet are Moradnagar (Ghaziabad) MLA Rajpal Tyagi and Machhli Shaher (Jaunpur) MLA Subhash Pandey. They were administered oath by UP Governor TV Rajeswar.
Through this rejigging exercise, the BSP chief has ensured representation of all castes and communities in the Cabinet, which has around half a dozen ministers each from Brahmin and Thakur communities now.
Rumours were rife that the party chief had asked a few of her ministers to put in their papers and work towards strengthening the party for Parliament elections. According to sources, only two resignations came, though there was no official confirmation.
Now, Mayawati’s team has 30 ministers of Cabinet rank, including the two sworn in on Thursday, and 23 ministers of state, with 15 holding independent charge of their departments.
