Slamming Deputy Prime Minister L.K. Advani and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati for sharing the dais at the recently-held BSP rally in Lucknow, the Congress today termed the event a ‘‘summit of political opportunism’’.
The party, however, shied from from making any comments on a possible tie-up with the National Conference in the wake of Omar Abdullah’s statement to sever all ties with the NDA.
Said party spokesman Jaipal Reddy: ‘‘The Advani-Mayawati meeting represents a coming together of nefarious self-interests. While Advani, who is a prime accused in the Babri Masjid demolition case, is desperate to save his own skin, Mayawati was equally desperate to enter the office of Chief Minister.
‘‘Advani, by making use of the clout he enjoys as Home Minister and senior BJP leader, is doing grave injustice to the august office of the Home Minister.’’
Accusing Mayawati of brazenly pandering to Advani’s selfish interests, Reddy pointed out that during the during the recent UP Assembly elections, Mayawati had repeatedly promised to get a fresh notification issued in the Babri Masjid case so that the three Union Ministers — Advani, Murli Manohar Joshi and Uma Bharati — could be prosecuted. But now ‘‘she has broken every rule in the book. She has shown monumental insensitivity to the queries made by the apex court,’’ he added.
Reddy refused to comment when asked whether the Congress will go for a tie-up with the National Conference if the latter walked out of the NDA. ‘‘How can we answer such hypothetical questions? Farooq Abdullah and Omar have been flip-flopping so much on their relationship with the NDA that we cannot figure out what they are up to.’’
