Claiming to have traced certain telephone calls made from the residence of Maulana Hussain Umarji, the alleged conspirator in the Godhra carnage, to Pakistan, the Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the carnage is believed to have sought the assistance of various intelligence agencies, including the Research and Analytical Wing (RAW) and CBI, to obtain information on the man to whom the calls were made.

Sources in the investigation team said that one number belonged to a Godhra resident who had shifted to Karachi several years back. Maulana had reportedly made several calls to that number. Sources said it was essential to know more about Maulana’s Karachi contact. Sources said that SIT, through the State Government, had asked for help from RAW and CBI. ‘‘IIt is only specialised agencies like RAW which can provide us with the information required,’’ said a source in the investigation team.
