The Maulana Azad Education Fund (MAEF) is set to get a bounty of over Rs 500 crore from the Human Resource Development Ministry after it approved a massive augmentation in the foundation’s corpus. The proposal will soon be heading for a Cabinet approval, said sources.
The proposal made by the Ministry of Minority Affairs asked for an additional release of funds for the foundation which is active in imparting education amongst educationally-backward minorities.
While the foundation operates with a corpus of some Rs 250 crore as of now, the HRD Ministry has approved allocation of another Rs 450 crore right away and more a little later to ensure the corpus is Rs 1,000 crore strong.
“We have been demanding an increase in funds for a very long time now because what we get is a pittance vis a vis the task set out before us. An augmented fund will go towards giving out more scholarships and creating more schools for which there is a massive demand in the minority sections,” said Ghayyur-e-Alam, vice-chairman, MAEF.
