Mammen Mathew, editor and managing director of Malayala Manorama, has become the first Indian to be appointed a Reuters Trustee, the Reuters Founders Share Company said in London.
Mammen (58), who served as president of the Indian Newspaper Society and of the Editors’ Guild of India, was member of the Press Council of India for two successive terms. He worked as a journalist in the UK and US in the late 60s.
The Reuters Founders Share Company was set up to safeguard the independence of Reuters. The trustees can prevent any group or individual from gaining a controlling share of the company. They have to ensure that Reuters Trust Principles are observed.
Chairman P. Gyllenhammar said: ‘‘Mammen Mathew brings a strong background in international journalism and will make a valuable contribution.’’
