Sri Lanka’s hardline Marxists on Monday pledged crucial but conditional support to Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa’s bid for the Presidency this year, an alliance analysts said would help his campaign.

Rajapaksa will go head to head with former PM Ranil Wickremesinghe in a vote most likely to be held in November.

‘‘We can safely say the (current) Prime Minister is the only candidate worth our consideration,’’ Wimal Weerawansa, propaganda secretary of the People’s Liberation Front (JVP), told a news conference.
