Just a few days ahead of its forthcoming initial public offer (IPO), car market leader Maruti Udyog Ltd has shown a 46 per cent growth in sales volume in May 2003, compared to the same month last year. The company sold 39,178 vehicle units during the month.
According to a company release, during the first two months of the current fiscal, Maruti’s passenger car sales volume was 39 per cent higher than in April-May 2002. In April 2003, the company’s domestic sales had grown by 30 per cent over April 2002.
In March 2003, Maruti had sold 42,123 vehicles in the domestic market, the highest ever monthly sales in the company’s history. The release stated that owing to higher demand, the company also started production at its third plant during May 2003.
The sales of Maruti 800 in May 2003 touched 16,907 units, a whopping 80 per cent higher than in May 2002. The Omni overcame a sluggish trend and grew 13 per cent in May 2003 compared to May 2002. The month also witnessed highest ever monthly sale of the WagonR model since it entered the Indian market in February 2000 at 5179 units. This is also 132 per cent higher than WagonR sale in May 2002. Alto notched up sales of 3,317 units, nearly 57 per cent higher than in May 2002. The Zen sold 4,384 units while Esteem gained Velocity and was up 11 per cent over May 2002. The Versa also showed positive signs at 284 units units while Baleno sold 172 units in the month.
