After fighting in courts for nearly three years Maruti may finally be able to use officially its domain name— marutionline.com. The company was so far unable to use this name for its own address on the net as another company which claimed to be engaged in manufacturing and trading of software had registered the domain name as its own.

Maruti has so far been using marutiudyog.com as its official domain name for its site on the web.

Maruti first took the other company which had registered as marutionline.com to World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) for mediation almost three years ago.

In November, 2000, WIPO ruled in favour of Maruti Udyog, but the trading company appealed in Delhi High Court soon after.

According to an order of the Delhi HC dated May 17, 2002 signed by Justice S K Mahajan, ‘‘there are no merits in the petition nor any case has been made out for interference in the order of the WIPO Arbitration and Mediation Center. The petition is misconceived and is, accordingly, dismissed.’’

A Maruti official said that ‘‘now we can use this domain name for any e-commerce activities undertaken by the company in the future.’’ The Delhi High Court said that despite a direction being given by the court to the petitioner to file in the court its balance sheet along with the details of its turnover and the number of employees engaged by it, nothing has been placed on record.

Maruti Udyog is still fighting to retrieve another of its internet domain name maruti.net which is registered by a second party.
