Even as a storm rages through Zimbabwean cricket team coach Geoff Marsh is best putting up a brave front. ‘‘I have a job on hand and I am doing it,’’ remarked the former Australian opener during a telephonic chat with The Indian Express.

Amidst chalking out plans for the battles ahead against the Sri Lankans with young skipper Tatenda Taibu, the 46-year-old Marsh agreed these were ‘‘difficult and tough times’’ for Zimbabwean cricket.

‘‘My focus is on getting this team to be better. I know it is tough, but it is an interesting challenge,’’ he says adding philosophically, ‘‘all for the sake of cricket.’’

The challenge has, in fact, been an embarrassing 0-4 verdict as the second string players chosen to play against Sri Lanka failed to make a mark. Marsh, however, points to the positives. ‘‘It is a very young side, we have sixteen young players. But we have improved as the series has progressed.’’

The scenario is a far cry for a man who had essayed roles as an opener, selector and coach during Australia’s resurgence. But he says the changeover to his present role was not ‘‘difficult’’. He has his reasons too. ‘‘I was aware of what I was getting into. The challenge was to get a side at the bottom of the table and take them up.’’

Marsh’s stint with the Zimbabweans that began in August 2001 has witnessed politicisation and defections galore which saw the likes of Andy Flower, Henry Olonga and Alistair Campbell making their exit.

Did the thought of quitting cross his mind? ‘‘No never,’’ is a firm response. ‘‘I agree it has been a rocky three year period, what with all the integration process going on. But I believe if you add the Flowers, Goodwins to this side, we would be a very strong side. Also our recent under-19 performances have been great.’’

However, the dice has not rolled that way and Marsh is aware as much. ‘‘We were headed towards the top. But that is the sad part, with a small pool to pick from we always find it difficult to find replacements.’’

Marsh’s contract with Zimbabwe Cricket Union (ZCU) ends on September 20 and he intends to continue till that date. All other options will have to wait because ‘‘focus will therefore be only with Zimbabwe cricket.’’

There was a time when Marsh had a brush with Indian cricket as consultant to the BCCI but opted out on his own accord citing the tight schedules. Does he still regret it? ‘‘No not all. I still stick by my decision. Look at the Indian team, they have been playing non-stop. Comparatively the Zimbabwe side play two Tests series only. This way I get to spend more time with my family as well.’’

Marsh, however, had a word of praise for Team India and coach John Wright. ‘‘The Indian team has gone from strength to strength. Wright especially, has been fantastic and so fabulously committed.’’
