
Marathi novelist Shivaji Govind Sawant, 62, died of a cardiac arrest on Wednesday at a nursing home in Goa’s Margaon, family sources said. He is survived by his wife, a son and a daughter.
Sawant is best known for Mrityunjay, his novel based on the life of Mahabharata hero Karna, and Yugandhar, exploring the life of Krishna.
Sawant, contesting for president of the 76th Akhil Bharatiya Marathi Sahitya Sammelan scheduled at Karad in January, was on a campaign of south Maharashtra and Goa. The poll has been put in abeyance, Akhil Bharatiya Marathi Sahitya Mahamandal chief G.N. Jogalekar said.
Born on August 31, 1940, in Ajra, Sawant started as a teacher in Kolhapur. Mrityunjay, known in Marathi as Mahakadambari, was recommended for the Nobel Prize in 1990.
