Jharkhand CM Babulal Marandi today ruled out a review of the controversial domicile policy, which permits preferential treatment to locals in appointment to Class III and IV jobs, even as the death toll in Wednesday’s police firing on rampaging pro- and anti-domicile factions in and around Jharkhand capital Ranchi rose to six.
Marandi, who arrived here this afternoon after meeting BJP leaders including L.K. Advani in New Delhi on Tuesday, said an all-party meeting would be called on the issue soon. But he announced no dates for this. His press advisor Dilip Srivastava later said that at a Cabinet meeting held today all ministers had expressed their opinion on the issue, but ‘‘no one had sought its withdrawal’’.
Marandi also declared that from now on his government would deal with all mischief-makers sternly. ‘‘If anybody takes the law into his hands during the bandh, his hands and legs will be broken,’’ he said.
Anti-domicile groups, including the Upekshit Manch and the Jharkhand Chatra Yuva Samiti, have called a 24-bandh tomorrow against the violence.
Meanwhile, two deaths were reported from Mecon’s colony and one from Dibdih under Doranda police station. Another was reported from Adarsh Nagar under Hatia police station.
Two men succumbed to injuries sustained in police firing at Adarsh Nagar, while at Dibdih and Mecon’s colony four men died in firing by guards employed by PSU Mecons.
There were no reports of fresh violence in the city, which remains under curfew, though the situation is still tense. CRPF, RAF and state police patrolled the curfew-bound areas today. Curfew is likely to continue till tomorrow.
All shops, business establishments, schools, colleges and even the High Court remained closed for the second consecutive day today. Attendance in the state secretariat was negligible and traffic on roads thin.
Police have so far arrested 15 people in connection with yesterday’s violence. Some 72 persons were injured, 14 of them seriously in the violence that broke out during a dawn-to-dusk statewide bandh called in support of the policy.
