A leading woman entrepreneur in Nepal overcame infidelity by her husband and poverty to establish a business, which is now under alleged threats from Maoists who are forcing her to shift base to India.
Laxmi Sharma, the only woman in Nepal to own a film studio, has started packing up her business to shift to Jaipur after threats from Maoists who demanded a lumpsum from her.
The Maoists allegedly padlocked her handicraft manufacturing company and studio a couple of months ago, Laxmi was quoted as saying in the media. Sharma said she left her husband and returned to her parents’ house after he allegedly cheated on her. The mother of three started a small factory to support her family.
She studied leather technology in West Bengal and woodcraft and machinery works in Varanasi. On returning home, Laxmi set up a handicrafts business with support from family and started to export her products abroad. Inspired by a visit to the Hollywood, three years ago Laxmi established film studio here.
