
The ASCON survey for April-June 2006 on the manufacturing sector carried out by industry body CII has indicated balanced growth for the industry over last year even as there is a dip in exports as compared to the last quarter.
The survey revealed that out of 140 sectors, 34 recorded excellent growth rate of more than 20 per cent, 56 recorded a high growth rate of 10-20 per cent, 36 registered moderate growth rate of 0-10 per cent while 14 sectors reported negative growth.
A larger number of sectors were in the high-growth category, shifting up from moderate growth in this period as compared to the last quarter results.
Sectors that were in the excellent growth category included lead and lead alloy, sponge iron, motor starters, power transformers, textile machinery, LCVs and cars, among others.
As many as 26 sectors out of the 70 sectors reporting sales registered excellent growth while 28 sectors registered high growth and 18 sectors reported moderate growth.
On the export front, the survey indicated that 16 sectors have shown excellent growth with 10 sectors in the high-growth category and 11 sectors recording moderate growth while 4 sectors registered a fall in exports.
The survey also pointed that the consumer durables sector has scored more in the excellent growth category than the corresponding period last year. There is also a greater shift from the moderate growth category to the excellent growth and high growth category as compared to the corresponding period last year.
