CHANDIGARH, Sept 3: Akali Dal (Amritsar) president Simranjit Singh Mann today called upon Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal to end the alliance with the Bharatiya Janata Party on the issue of People’s Commission.
He reminded Badal the setting up of a judicial commission to go into militancy was the poll promise of the now ruling Akali Dal and the human rights organisations took the initiative to constitute People’s Commission as the party backtracked after coming into power.
Mann said the BJP had also taken a different stand on the issue of transfer of Udham Singh Nagar.
He pointed out that such a commission was set up after the World War II to investigate the excesses by the Nazis.
He cited several other examples with South Africa being the latest. He said the law on human rights was being codified by the United Nations.
Rebutting the criticism by BJP MLA Luxmi Kanta Chawla, he said she should approach the commission as petitioner to plead the case of the widows of the police officials instead of staging demonstrations.
