While protests by the Left over price hike gained momentum, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Friday said that the government is committed to economic reform and liberalisation and will continue to follow a policy of minimum interference.

“We remain committed to economic reform and liberalisation. It is said that in ancient India a monarch was regarded as a good king if he did not interfere too much in the life of the people. That has been our guiding principle as well,” the PM told a group of delegates attending the IISS-Citi India Global Forum in the capital.

Urging international players to invest in the country he said that in today’s world, India is more globally integrated and confident about its future. “I invite you to invest in India and stay invested, because for India the best is yet to come,” the prime minister said. He said that despite different political parties coming to power since 1991, the process of liberalisation has not been reversed. Singh, who quoted John Maynard Keynes during his talk with the international delegation, said that his government’s aim is to foster an environment of freedom and creativity.

The PM, however, conceded that while India has followed a “successful strategy of reintegrating into the world economy”, globalization is still a challenge. “Globalisation is both a challenge and an opportunity and India would like to be an active participant in the process of globalisation,” he said.
