Protests broke out in Mandya district of Karnataka today following the Supreme Court’s orders to release Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu. Hundreds of protesters, led by the Raitha Hitharakshana Samiti chief and former MP G. Made Gowda and JD(U) Parliamentary Board chief B. Somashekhar, were arrested while trying to take out a rally at the Silver Jubilee park.

The situation turned ugly when farmers assembled there attempted to ransack a cinema hall. A mob of around 500 pelted stones at police which resorted to lathicharge and lobbed teargas shells.

In another incident, Raitha Sangha chief K.S. Puttanniah and his followers were taken into custody at the Krishnaraja Sagar right bank canal when they tried to reach the dam. Villagers on the Bangalore-Mysore highway staged rasta roko, burnt tyres and blocked movement of vehicular traffic, forcing the KSRTC to suspend bus services both in urban and rural areas. Hundreds of armed policemen have been deployed in almost all villages of Mandya and Mysore districts. All roads near Srirangapatna and Pandavapura linking to Krishnaraja Sagar reservoir have been blocked.

Meanwhile, members of the Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha (KRRS) tonight threatened to lay siege to Kabini reservoir tomorrow to prevent release of Cauvery water.
