Man who burnt alive widow in Naroda-Patiya gets lifeterm

Justice was finally delivered today, when a fast-track court awarded life sentence to one Mohammed Tanvir Bashir Khan Pathan for murdering a 30-year-old widow and eyewitness to the 2002 Naroda-Patiya massacre.

Justice was finally delivered today, when a fast-track court awarded life sentence to one Mohammed Tanvir Bashir Khan Pathan for murdering a 30-year-old widow and eyewitness to the 2002 Naroda-Patiya massacre.

Judge I J Vohra sentenced Pathan, a resident of Dariyapur, for setting Bibi Bano Mehmood Sheikh ablaze on December 7, 2004. She succumbed to her burn injuries on January 1, 2005.

According to the prosecution, Bibi Bano, the widow of Mehmood Sheikh, a victim of the Naroda-Patiya massacre, was burned by her paramour Pathan for the compensation money that she received from a charitable trust.

Bibi Bano lost eight family members, including husband Mehboob Sheikh, daughter Shabnam, her mother-in-law, brother-in-law, sister-in-law and their three children, in the Naroda-Patiya massacre. Bano survived the tragedy with her son Shafiq Ahmad (10) and daughter Parveen (7).

She was forced to live in the Shah-e-Alam camp till she was rehabilitated in Faisal Park in Vatva and received around

Rs 3.5 lakh in compensation. Around this time, Bano, who used to frequent her sister-in-law’s house in Vatva, got friendly with Pathan, her brother-in-law’s friend.

The prosecution stated that Pathan insisted on marrying Bibi Bano on hearing about the compensation money and when she refused to marry him, he set her ablaze in her own house in a fit of anger. Neighbours took her to the V S Hospital, where she later died.
