As Roma kept Manchester United from attaining a perfect record in the group stage of the Champions League, holding the two-time champions to a 1-1 draw Wednesday. Gerard Pique gave the English champions the lead in the 34th minute, but Amantino Mancini equalised in the 71st. Pique headed a corner past Roma goalkeeper Doni for his second goal of the competition. Mancini evaded Wes Brown and then beat United goalkeeper Tomasz Kuszczak from the left.
United and Roma had both already clinched spots in the second round from Group F.
Meanwhile, Lyon and Fenerbahce won their final group games to capture the last two available spots in the knockout round.
Two late goals by Karim Benzema added to an early strike by Sidney Govou in Lyon’s 3-0 victory at Rangers. Lyon advanced from Group E with FC Barcelona, who had already qualified but came from behind to beat VfB Stuttgart 3-1 with strikes by Giovani Dos Santos, Samuel Eto’o and Ronaldinho. It was Eto’o’s first goal in only his second game since his three-month layoff with a thigh injury.
Lyon and Fenerbahce join 14 other teams in the December 21 draw. The others are former winners Real Madrid, AC Milan, Liverpool, Barcelona, Manchester United, FC Porto, Inter Milan, Celtic and six teams yet to win European soccer’s most prestigious club title, Arsenal, Chelsea, Schalke, Olympiakos, AS Roma and Sevilla. Sevilla won at Slavia Prague 3-0 to finish at the top of Group F. Arsenal placed second after beating Steaua Bucharest 2-1.
