CHANDIGARH, July 22: City Additional District and Sessions Judge G. S. Sandhu today held a Burail resident guilty of culpable homicide and directed him to undergo rigorous imprisonment for a period of two-and-a-half years and also pay a fine of Rs 1,000.

Holding accused Jasbir Singh guilty of causing serious injury to one Munish Kumar by afflicting a blow on his head with a kassi, the judge also directed Jasbir Singh to further undergo rigorous imprisonment for a period of six months in case of default of payment of fine. Earlier on May 13, 1996, the accused was booked for attempt to murder under Section 307 of the IPC. However, after considering the nuances, the judge later converted the case to one of culpable homicide (Section 308 of IPC).

Complainant Munish Kumar had stated that on May 5, 1996, he had gone to attend a reception where drinks were being served. He had stated that both he and Jasbir (who was also present on the occasion) were drunk and a heated exchange of words took place between the two over some issue. However, the situation was prevented from taking a turn for the worse by the other guests.

When Munish was about to leave, he was confronted and abused by Jasbir. Munish tried to leave the place, but was hit by Jasbir from behind with a kassi, thus inflicting serious injury upon the complainant.
