CHANDIGARH, Sept 17: A Manimajra resident has been sentenced to 18-month imprisonment and fined Rs 1,000 by UT Judicial Magistrate (Ist Class) Jasbir Singh in a case of cheating and criminal breach of trust.

Naveen Kumar was further directed to undergo imprisonment for one month in default of payment. Co-accused in the same case, Rajinder Lal, was, meanwhile, acquitted by the magistrate. Kumar, along with Lal, had earlier been booked under Sections 406, 420 besides Section 193 of the IPC on a complaint of Sector 18 resident R K Gupta.

In his complaint,Gupta had stated that the accused, functioning as his partners, had defrauded him and the firm — Messrs Jyoti Knitwears — of Rs 5.50 lakh. The magistratesentenced Kumar to 18 months’ imprisonment under Section 193, another 18 months’ imprisonment under Section 420, besides one-year imprisonment under Section 406 IPC. The sentences will run concurrently.
