A 30-year-old man from Salla village in Palanpur district was tied to a tractor and taken round the village before being lynched in full public view. Of the 12 people named in the police complaint in this regard, 11 have been arrested while one is still at large.
Victim Ramesh Patel was in love with one Asha Patel (believed to be in her early 20s) of the same village and later eloped with her to Himmatnagar. However, as Asha’s family was against the match, they followed the couple to Himmatnagar and brought back Asha, police said. Ramesh too returned home on August 24.
Just a day later, 12 armed members of Asha’s family, including her father and brothers, broke into Ramesh’s house and dragged him out. In order to teach Ramesh a lesson, they tied him to a tractor and took him round the village.
A profusely bleeding Ramesh was then taken to a local dairy near the gram panchayat and beaten to death at around 10.30 am on Friday.
Based on a complaint filed by Ramesh’s father Maffabhai Patel, 12 people were booked on charges of rioting and murder. “While 11 have already been arrested, Asha’s brother Suresh Patel, who is at large, is expected to be arrested soon,” said Palanpur SP Vipul Agrawal.
Sub-Inspector of Gadh Police Station C L Solanki, who is investigating the case, said: “Patel once owned a shop in the village, but was currently jobless. This was the main reason why the girl’s parents were against their relationship.”
