One man was killed and two others were injured in clashes between supporters and opponents of South Korea’s POSCO planned steel plant in a village in Orissa, police said on Saturday.
It is the first death caused by the protests since some local people began opposing the project in Orissa after it was announced three years ago.
The man was killed on Friday when around 150 supporters and 300 opponents attacked each other with swords, axes and home-made bombs in Gobindpur, a village divided between those looking forward to jobs and economic development promised by the plant and those angry at having to give up land.
The $12-billion project is the largest foreign investment in India, but has been stalled by frequent protests. The government has so far been able to acquire only about a quarter of the required 4,000 acres of land.
