KOLKATA, JAN 19: The ruling CPI(M) today attacked Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee for misusing her power as Railway Minister. Addressing a press conference here today, influential CPI(M) MLA Robin Dev, who represents the state Assembly at the Zonal Railway Users’ Consultative Committee, said that the minister had violated rules laid down by the Railways with regard to the committee.
“According to the rules, the minister is entitled to nominate eight members but the minister had nominated 15 members,” Dev claimed.
He said that the members enjoy a number of facilities like free travel for certain distances and other allowances. Showing the list of members which include people from both the Trinamool and the BJP, Dev said that the Trinamool leader was using her position to aggrandise her political interests.
The CPI(M) leader also showed the booklet issued by the Railways after the 105th session of ZRUCC on January 4 and pointed out bloomers in the portfolios of ministers in the list of members and the ministers who had nominated them. For example Ajit Panja, the Minister of State for External Affairs had been described as chief minister of Jharkand, George Fernandes was described as Minister of State for Mines and Minerals, Rita Verma as Minister of State for External Affairs. “It shows how callous they are in these matters and how the Railways are being run. I have raised the matter with general manager of Eastern Railways I.I.M.S. Rana and he said they were all printing misrtakes. But this is unacceptable,” Dev said.
Pankaj Banerjee, chairman of the Trinamool Congress policy-making body, however, brushed aside these allegations. “They can always go to court if they think something unlawful had been done by the Minister,” Banerjee told this reporter.
