Former Test player and national selector Ashok Malhotra today expressed his doubt about the future of the newly-formed players’ association — ICPA — saying it would not be possible for a ‘tried-and-failed-man’ like Arun Lal to run it. Malhotra also wrote a letter to ICPA secretary Arun Lal and demanded certain clarifications regarding the previous body, Association of Indian Cricketers (AIC), which was formed in 1989.
‘‘Is Mr Lal a dream merchant or a messiah of Indian cricket? Some 14 years back he sold us a dream for the betterment of Indian cricket. Nothing happened. Why is it that he again has to don that mantle?’’ he asked while talking to reporters here.
Malhotra said, ‘‘I have now been marked as a villain, a stumbling block to cricket s progress. Perhaps, I am too small a fry to ask all this. But inspite of my audacity these are valid questions.’’
‘‘A good looking face needs a healthy body. Only some of the top stars of today will not do. It has to be an association of the first class players. The previous association had more than 300 members in its rooster. But once the the problems were sorted out with the board, AIC got bored with its activities and hence lost momentum. If its the same this time then the fate will be no different,’’ he said. In his letter, Malhotra has mentioned seven points that included demanding information on the date on which the association had been registered and the registration number, since incorporation of the association, what actions Arun Lal had undertaken in fulfilment of the objectives of the association.
