MUMBAI, JAN 8: Garment exporters demanded a hassle-free import regime for procuring world-class fabrics to manufacture high-end garments so as to enable the country to achieve a garment export turnover of $ nine billion by the year 2004. Currently, India's garment exports are hovering around $ 5 billion and a quota free scenario in 2005 would pit the country against big-time players like China and Vietnam, according to the chairman of the Apparel Exports Promotion Council, Raju Goenka."India's garment exports need to grow at the rate of 10 per cent per annum for reaching a turnover of $ nine billion by 2004 and double its share in the global markets to 5.5 per cent," he said. "Two-thirds of the domestic garment industry's exports are governed by quota system,'' he said.
