July 3: The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) is currently drawing up a master plan for the development of Mumbai port over the next two decades. This was revealed by Sharad Kale, Chairman of the Mumbai Port Trust (MBPT) while addressing the press in the city on Thursday.

The chairman was speaking on the occasion of the 125 anniversary celebrations of the Mumbai Port Trust at the Asiatic Society at the Town Hall, Mumbai.

A team from JICA has been visiting the Mumbai port and has submitted a preliminary report to the port authorities. Another team is to visit the port in April next year. The master plan is to give the projected vessel traffic of Mumbai port and the future of the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT).

He stated that the MBPT had started two major projects to replace the submerged oil pipelines and to modernise its Marine Oil Terminal at Butcher Island. The projects would increase the capacity of the port to handle oil and oil products.

Earlier, history was repeated at the Durbar Hall of the Town Hall when the MBPT trustees met exactly as the first board of trustees had 125 years ago on July 3, 1873.

To commemorate the historic occasion, the Asiatic Society’s Joint Honorary finance secretary Rajan Jaykar arranged an exhibition of picture postcards of old Bombay consisting of 240 enlarged prints, arranged in 30 frames showing Mumbai between 1899 and 1911.
