ISLAMABAD, June 27: The chief executive of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), Majid Khan, seemed to be on the firing line following differences with one of the closest aides of Prime Minister, Nawaz Sharif and steps are under way for a complete overhaul of the board.
Moves are afoot to dissolve the PCB, revise its constitution and install an all-powerful chairman after abolishing the post of chief executive, the widely circulated English daily, The News said today.
Quoting top officials, the daily said the government was in the process of giving final shape to its plans and approval of the President, Farooq Ahmed Khan Leghari, and the Prime Minister will be sought.
The need for dissolution of PCB and a change at its top has come mainly after the PCB’s failure in settling the Aamir Sohail controversy and Majid Khan’s inability to honour the commitment he made to Syed Mushahid Hussain, an advisor to the Prime Minister on sport, the paper said.
It also said that as per the new constitution being drafted, the chairman will enjoy immense powers and he will appoint the secretary, treasurer and other staff while the post of chief executive will be abolished.
The existing constitution of the PCB, which makes the chief executive all-powerful, was said to have been drawn by Majid’s cousin, Javed Burki, who acts as the advisor on cricket to President Leghari, who is also the board’s patron.
Majid’s trouble started when Mushahid Hussain, believed to be a very influential man in the present government, asked the PCB chief to revoke the ban on Sohail and include him in the team after unconditional apology by the opening batsman.
Sohail, who had been banned for making allegations of betting against certain teammates, submitted an unconditional apology but his ban was simply turned into a Rs 50,000 fine and he was asked to furnish evidence for his charges before a PCB enquiry committee.
The news claimed that Mushahid Hussain was “greatly annoyed” with Majid over the issue and has been refusing to meet the PCB chief executive lately. Majid has been been at the helm of PCB for nearly one year.
Pakistan’s cricket establishment has always been governed by the politicians in power and considering the fact that Majid Khan was installed as PCB chief executive during the earlier Benazir Bhutto regime this situation was expected.
