November 28: Prime accused in the Khopdi tragedy at Khopoli, Sheikh Mohammed Abdul Latif Bedekar (26), was nabbed by Kalyan police at the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) depot early today morning.

Giving details about the arrest, PSI Rajkumar Kothmire, who headed the operation, told Express Newsline, “An anonymous caller informed us that Sheikh was at the depot, waiting to board a bus. So I, along with six constables, reached the spot and arrested him.”

Reportedly, Sheikh made an abortive attempt at escape, and broke down when the police nabbed him.

The policemen will receive Rs 60,000 as rewards for their efforts. The Khopoli Municipal Corporation had announced a reward of Rs 50,000 for information about the accused. The Raigad police had announced a reward of Rs 10,000 for the samepurpose.

Sheikh, Kothmire said, “is a history-sheeter and had once almost killed a police inspector from Khopoli in an attack.” He added Sheikh was not armed at the time of arrest.
