With three titles under their belt this season, Mahindras are all set to play their first AFC Cup match against Dhofar FC of Oman when they both meet tomorrow at Nehru Stadium here.
Mahindra United who are placed in Group B along with Alwahda Sanaa (Yemen), and Al Wahda (Syria) are likely to field mostly the same side that played in the National Football League barring James Singh, Felix and Samson (both foreigners) who have not come due to injury.
With five players from national ranks — Kalyan Chubey, Naseem Akhtar, Shanumugham Venkatesh, Abhishek Yadav, Khalid Jamil and two foreigners Odartley Lawson (Ghana) and Patron (Togo), the red brigrade will depend on them for success.
“Our boys have shown inconsistency in the NFL. The AFC Cup is a good opportunity to express themselves and regain consistency, they have shown inexperience when it matters and will have to play to their potential if we want to win as our opponents who are coming from the Middle East are tough footballers,” said coach David Booth. “The Goan crowd has always been supportive to our team whenever we played here and tomorrow we expect a larger crowd to cheer our team.”
