The fears over the health of Indian tennis star Leander Paes have been put to rest. On the basis of the tests carried on him, the doctors at the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Orlando said that the Indian star was ‘‘out of danger’’. Paes had been was admitted to the hospital last Wednesday when he complained of severe headache. The doctors diagnosed a lesion in Leander’s brain.

Doctors said that there was a ‘parasitic infection’ in the brain, which meant there was no chance of any ‘malignancy’, which initially was suspected.

Meanwhile, Leander’s long-time friend and former doubles partner Mahesh Bhupathi, while preparing for the US Open starting on Monday, hoped to see his Davis Cup teammate back on court soon. Talking to The Indian Express Bhupathi, who visited Leander some days back, said ‘‘Lee was in good spirits. I was certain that none of these things would affect him on the court.’’

On his chances at the last Slam of the year, Mahesh said that the only threat was from the Bryan Brothers but was quick to add, ‘‘The best on any day is the deserving winner’’.
