Maharashtra will move the Supreme Court against the Bombay High Court’s order of September 2 concerning admissions to engineering and medical colleges of deemed universities in the state.
‘‘The matter was discussed by the state Cabinet today,” Health Minister Digvijay Khanvilkar said. He said the move would have no bearing on admissions for medical seats, which restarted today.
Khanvilkar said the decision to move the SC was to elicit directives which can ensure smoother admissions next year. The prime issue to be raised is the high court ruling that reservations in medical and engineering colleges would be applicable only to the 50 per cent government quota and not the remaining 50 per cent management quota. ‘‘This leaves only 25 per cent of the total seats for reservations,’’ he said.
He added the state has been given four weeks by HC to submit a report on colleges securing indirect grants like concessions over land, water and power bills. Almost all colleges have secured such aid from the state, which may now seek seats against grants from the 50 per cent quota available with college managements.
