Maharashtra will move the Supreme Court against the Bombay High Court’s order of September 2 concerning admissions to engineering and medical colleges of deemed universities in the state.

‘‘The matter was discussed by the state Cabinet today,” Health Minister Digvijay Khanvilkar said. He said the move would have no bearing on admissions for medical seats, which restarted today.

Khanvilkar said the decision to move the SC was to elicit directives which can ensure smoother admissions next year. The prime issue to be raised is the high court ruling that reservations in medical and engineering colleges would be applicable only to the 50 per cent government quota and not the remaining 50 per cent management quota. ‘‘This leaves only 25 per cent of the total seats for reservations,’’ he said.

He added the state has been given four weeks by HC to submit a report on colleges securing indirect grants like concessions over land, water and power bills. Almost all colleges have secured such aid from the state, which may now seek seats against grants from the 50 per cent quota available with college managements.

Dharmendra Kevalshankar Jaiswar, a student of Srimati Indira Devisaran Vidyalaya in Powai had tried to stop two class X students from harassing his brother Arvind Jaiswar of the same class on the school premises yesterday, police said.

8 students expelled in Mumbai
MUMBAI: After IIT-Delhi, it’s the acclaimed Veermata Jijabai Technical Institute’s turn to be in the news for the wrong reasons. On Sunday, eight students of the institute were suspended from the hostel, after two freshers complained to the rector about ragging.

Two first-year students lodged a complaint on Saturday night, said sources. After a meeting with Principal Dr S.D. Varvandkar, the eight students were asked to leave the hostel.

Cases against seven law students
PONDICHERRY: Police on Wednesday registered cases against seven law college students here for allegedly ragging their juniors. The police sources said that the two second year students — Prakash and Jayamurthy — were beaten up by the V year students, following their refusal to ‘‘obey their commands’’.
