MUMBAI, July 19: Maharasthra’s Udesh Shinde lifted 680 kg to claim the gold medal in the men’s 110 kg class of the Bombay Paints-sponsored West Zone senior powerlifting championships that concluded this evening at the Andheri Sports Complex, here.
Shinde recorded 280 kg in the squat, 170 kg in the bench press and 230 kg in the dead lift to beat Madhya Pradesh’s Sharif Khan (640 kg) and Gujarat’s SP Sikh (520 kg).
Maharashtra effected a clean sweep in the 82.5 kg class in the women’s competition. Raksha Maharao lifting 310 kg to claim the gold, Nivedita Vaidya (215 kg) and Suvarna Panchakshiri (205 kg) finishing behind her. State lifters ruled the roost in the 67.5 kg and 75 kg classes as well. Asha Pujari (360 kg), Deepa Goswami (237.5 kg) and Sangeeta Mahadik (230 kg) completing the sweep in the 67.5 kg event.
Continuing Maharasthra’s domination in the 75kg class, Arpana Khodway (270 kg), Madhvi Patil (237.5 kg) and Rajni Agarwal (135 kg) emulated the feat of their 67.5 kg teammates.
Sanjay Madhav (Maharashtra) clinched gold in the 75 kg event, lifting 662.5 kg followed by Madhya Pradesh’s Jitendra Thakre (605 kg) and Shakti Bushan Singh (577.5 kg).
Arjun Padlekar brought Maharasthra another gold with a total lift of 617.5 in the 82.5 kg class. Padlekar was followed by MP’sAnthony Smith (537.5 kg) and J Bagchi (505 kg).
Top honours in the 90 kg event, however, went to Madhya Pradesh with Sanjay Saxena totalling 702.5 kg followed by statemate Anand Singh (612.5 kg) and Rajendra Saini (Rajasthan) who lifted 472.50.
KS Aninjit lifting 650 kg brought M P another gold, pipping Maharasthra’s Suryakat Garde (645 kg). Prince Thangchand of Gujarat collected the bronze with 445 kg.
Ambar Joshi, weighing 143 kg, was the cynosure in the State men’s 125 kg plus event. He did not disappoint his Mumbai Suburban fans, lifting a record 710 kgs to win the gold medal.
ADRIAN SLAMS THREE: Adrian Mascarenhas netted three goals in St Mary’s (ISC `A’) 6-0 drubbing of St Paul’s (Dadar) in the under-16 Inter-Schools football tournament at the Xaverian Ground in Parel, today. Oliver D’ Souza pumped in two while Dinesh Fernandes managed one to add to St Paul’s woes.

SAYYED SUPREME: Sajid Sayyed (MLWB Naigaon) overcame Mahendra Tambe (Bank of Maharashtra) 25-5, 25-22 to clinch the open singles trophy of the Kshatriya Union Club-organised, 35th Open carrom tournament which came to a close today at the Vanmali Hall, Dadar. The event was co-sponsored by Bank of India, Philips India Limited, Union Bank of India and State Bank of India.
