Legislators in Maharashtra want a club of their own and they are eyeing one of most expensive slices of Mumbai’s real estate — a plot at Cuffe Parade, a stone’s throw from the Arabian Sea at South Mumbai.

Members of the State Legislative Assembly have urged the government to allot a 23,000-square metre plot at Cuffe Parade for a grand gymnasium complex and Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh has called for a meeting to discuss the proposal.

As per a note circulated by deputy speaker of the Assembly and the chief promoter of the Legislature Gymkhana, Pramod Shende, the government has been asked to hand over a 23,046-square metre plot at Backbay Reclamation Block owned by the Maharashtra government.

The plot is priced at Rs 5 crore and the legislators expect to buy it at a nominal price. The idea has been floating around for quite sometime and in July 2000, a letter signed by about 100 to 125 legislators, was handed over to Deshmukh.

The legislators want the gymkhana constructed on the lines of the club at Parliament for sitting and former MPs. As such, the gymnasium complex will consist of a cafetaria, restaurants, gymnasium, swimming pool, badminton and lawn tennis courts and arrangements for indoor games.

The proposal also has plans for seminar hall, a library, communication centre with Internet facilities and video conferencing services, party room, TV room and rooms for members. Revenue Minister Ashok Chavan said he was aware of the proposal and pointed out that a reservation had been made.
