NAGPUR, June 1: Goalkeeper Ratnamala Gaydhane’s fine job under the bar and Preeti Supare, Anit Pandhre and Mukta Deshmukh’s frequent scoring saw Maharashtra women beat Madhya Pradesh 21-20 to win the Mayor’s Cup West Zone handball championship that ended here at the Yeshwant Stadium yesterday evening.

The Maharashtra men, however, did not prove lucky as they lost the final 21-30 to Madhya Pradesh. In the under-12 segments, Pune boys and Wardha girls won the titles.

The senior women final was a neck-to-neck fight with both MP and Maharashtra teams scoring at will. There were many a moment which saw scores draw level.

Maharashtra were leading 11-8 till the half-time as Gaydhane, who replaced regular goalie Aslesha Ingole made 12 saves. Supare (6), Pandhare (6), Mukta Deshmukh (5) and Fulsunge, Sakore and K Pandey (1 each) were the main goal-getters.

The men’s final was dominated by MP’s B D Kurupati, who netted 11 goals with ease. Feroze Khan (5), Harsh Tripathi (4), Gurdeep Singh and Deeraj Nagpal (3each) and Parminder (2) rotated well.

From the loser’s side, Rajesh Naidu and Rajesh Bansod scored 7 goals each. Sudeep Waghchaure (6), Pankaj (2) and Pandey (1) were the other scorers.

Hosts Nagpur boys winning run was cut off in the final by the Pune in the under-12 final. Pune’s 12-6 win was a result of fine display by Amol Tate (4). Adik Pawar, Sharad Giram and Nilesh Bhage scored two goals each.
