A curfew was clamped in Dhule town in North Maharashtra following clashes between members of two communities, police said.

The authorities took the measure after the situation went out of control with rioters indulging in arson and stone pelting, they said, adding police used tear gas shells and fired in the air to disburse the mob.

Trouble started this afternoon when some people, belonging to a particular community, allegedly torn off banners of a Hindu outfit appealing people to attend a public meeting in Dhule’s Ram Mandir Chowk in the evening.
