Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh has come under the scanner of the Congress High Command once again for his controversial remarks against farmers in Vidarbha.

Congress spokesperson Jayanthi Natarajan on Tuesday said the party “categorically condemned” any derogatory remarks against farmers. Facing flak from the Central leadership, Deshmukh said his remarks had been distorted and quoted out of context, but senior Congress leaders remained unimpressed.

Party sources told The Indian Express that Congress President Sonia Gandhi had taken Deshmukh’s remarks “very seriously”. With the BSP making inroads among Dalits and the minority community disenchanted with the Congress-led state Government due to non-implementation of the Srikrishna Commission report, “insulting the farming community” was the last thing the party expected from its CM, said a senior Congress leader.

The latest controversy has given fresh ammunition to Deshmukh’s detractors led by Narayan Rane. About a dozen MLAs as well as Rane are camping in Delhi to seek an appointment with Sonia Gandhi to complain against the Chief Minister.
