Maha cabinet approves ordinance, fine for perpetrators of violence

State govt approved an ordinance making it mandatory for perpetrators of violence to compensate for the damage.

Maharashtra government on Wednesday approved a draft ordinance making it mandatory for perpetrators of violence to compensate for the damage caused to public property or even face jail term.

The proposal to make political parties and social organisation accountable for damage to public property was brought before the cabinet on Wednesday in view of violence unleashed by MNS workers in several parts of the state after the arrest of their leader Raj Thackeray.

However, Deputy Chief Minister R R Patil said “I had already announced about the ordinance in the state assembly and it was in-principle approved by the cabinet today.” “The ordinance will be enforced once the Governor signs it,” Patil said.

Three clauses of the Bombay Police Act of 1951 will be amended to make the existing law more comprehensive. The ordinance empowers the district collectors to declare the concerned area as unsecured zone, an official said.

Earlier, the powers rested with the state government and it would be given to the collector after the approval of the ordinance, he said.

The collector would evaluate the damage caused to the public property and impose fine, he added.

Stung by the heavy loss to public property due to MNS agitation, Patil had said yesterday that the cabinet will take a decision about the ordinance that makes political parties pay for the damage caused by their workers.
