Washington, September 9: One week before the Olympic Games in Sydney, a new report reveals the lure of money in modern sport fosters an atmosphere where athletes will do anything to win gold, including taking drugs.
Canadian duo lose appeals
TORONTO: Two of Canada’s top Olympic athletes have lost their appeals of failed drug tests and likely will be barred from participating in the Sydney Games. Equestrian Eric Lamaze was officially kicked off the Olympic team on Friday and faces a lifetime competition ban after failing a second drug test, the Canadian Equestrian Federation said.
Shortly after the Federation released its decision, an attorney for hammer thrower Robin Lyons said a review panel from the Canadian Centre for Ethics had rejected Lyons’ appeal of her suspension from the team for testing positive for an anabolic steroid.
Lyons, 23, who has denied wrongdoing, will take the case to an independent arbitrator, but it remained unclear whether the case could be heard before September 15.
