CHANDIGARH, Oct 6: Accepting the people’s verdict with humility, the BJP national senior vice-president K.L. Sharma attributed his defeat to the low polling in the city and the Party’s political fallout in Punjab.

Accompanied by outgoing MP Satya Pal Jain, city BJP chief Dharam Pal Gupta, city SAD president Gurpartap Singh Riar and former mayor Gian Chand Gupta at the party’s Kamlam Office in Sector 33 here, Sharma denied any political bickerings during the period of campaigning. I got maximum support from Jain while going house to house for the electioneering, he said. Pointing towards the election result, he said he polled more votes in comparison to the last Lok Sabha election.

Having close associations with Chandigarhians, he said he would devote maximum time here for the betterment of the city and its residents. Evading any questions relating to infighting within the two warring factions of the ruling BJP in the Municipal Corporation of Chandigarh, he ruled out any dissidence in the party.

We have received the result and have started monitoring it very closely to take steps to improve the party’s performance where required, he said.

Former MP Satya Pal Jain, looking very upset over the party’s defeat, said: "It is unfortunate for all of us that we have lost this prestigious seat to the Congress even though we have been gaining marginally since 1996".
