In its raids across the country yesterday, CBI registered 25 cases of disproportionate assets against government officials in a single day and movable assets worth Rs 19.35 crore were seized.

Speaking to The Indian Express, CBI Director U S Mishra said: ‘‘This is the faceless ‘babu’ who gives common people on the street the impression that everywhere you go, there is corruption in the country. The geographical spread of corruption is there for you to see and an anti-corruption drive is the CBI’s topmost priority.’’

When asked why the CBI was going after the small fish when the big fish got away, Mishra said, ‘‘Both are exploiters as far as the common man is concerned and these so-called small fish and corruption at the lower level that cause more distress to the common man.’’
