In its raids across the country yesterday, CBI registered 25 cases of disproportionate assets against government officials in a single day and movable assets worth Rs 19.35 crore were seized.

Speaking to The Indian Express, CBI Director U S Mishra said: ‘‘This is the faceless ‘babu’ who gives common people on the street the impression that everywhere you go, there is corruption in the country. The geographical spread of corruption is there for you to see and an anti-corruption drive is the CBI’s topmost priority.’’

When asked why the CBI was going after the small fish when the big fish got away, Mishra said, ‘‘Both are exploiters as far as the common man is concerned and these so-called small fish and corruption at the lower level that cause more distress to the common man.’’

		P Ananta Ramulu, Assistant Commissioner of Income Tax, Hyderabad: • Total recoveries: Rs 2.07 crore • Cash: Rs 32 lakh • Fixed Deposits: Rs 71 lakh n Bank Balance: Rs 36 lakh • Promisory notes against money lent: Rs 26 lakh Some cash and fixed deposit certificates were found in the concealed secret enclosures in wall panels and wooden cupboards. FD receipts were also hidden in photo frames, and a locker key was found inside a wall-clock. Ramulu joined in 1978 as a stenographer and became an Assistant Commissioner. Asim Kumar, Divisional Medical Officer, North Eastern Railway, Gorakhpur • Total recovery: Rs 1.58 crore • Cash: Rs 8.1 lakh • Fixed deposits: 25.6 lakh A palatial house in Gorakhpur, a plot in Gorakhpur and a flat in Delhi are other assets found. Pramod Kumar Gupta, Director, Income Tax (Reasearch), New Delhi • Total Recovery: Rs 51 lakh • Cash: Rs 26 lakh A three-storied house under construction in Kaushambi, Ghaziabad. Rajinder Kumar, Central Excise and M P Damle, Assistant Commissioner • Cash recovery: Rs 17.02 lakh • Five immovable properties — 3 flats in Thane, 1 flat in Pune and a duplex house in Mumbai. Manoj Kumar Pandey, Assistant Provident Fund Commissioner, Chandigarh • Total Recovery: Rs 44.5 lakh • Immovable property in Saharanpur and Ghaziabad.
