When Indira Gandhi at Pokharan morphs into a smiling Priyanka, Rahul slips into his father’s visage and the haunting Aye mere watan ke logon becomes a party number, you can be sure there are no full stops. Because this is the Congress counter to India Shining and a BJP campaign where Prime Minister Vajpayee is larger-than-life.

Out to tug heart strings by playing, replaying the many moods, faces of Indira and Rajiv, recalling the frenzied scenes that followed their assassinations, the Congress has prepared a four-minute video clip to package Sonia Gandhi and her children in the run-up to the Lok Sabha polls. This video will be played on mobile screens across the country to drum up support for the Congress.

The clips reinforce the many parallels partymen have drawn over the years between Indira and Priyanka. In the video, as Indira turns into Priyanka, a singer croons: ‘‘Tumhe Indira nazar aayegi Priyanka ko jab dekhoge (you will see Indira when you look at Priyanka).’’

Then an image of Rajiv Gandhi is followed by one of Rahul Gandhi: ‘‘Rajiv dikhenge tumko, Rahul ko jab dekhoge (You will see Rajiv when you look at Rahul).’’

Since Rajiv’s there, the Bofors guns too find space. Clips show the guns pounding Pakistani positions in Kargil. All this while, the singer reminds you: ‘‘Bofors ke kaaran jag ne Rajiv ko kya na pukara, goonji thi wahi tope dushman ko dhakka de mara (Because of Bofors, Rajiv was maligned. Yet these very guns had the enemy on the run).’’

Congress leader Jairam Ramesh says eight such films have been made. ‘‘These films have been made privately.’’

He said the party publicity committee — other than him, it also has Motilal Vohra, Ambika Soni, Ahmed Patel and Salman Khurshid — have watched these shots.

‘‘Jo shahid hue the unki zara yaad karo qurbani (remember those who scarificed their lives for the country),’’ is one line that has been retained from the original song and runs through the clip. Sonia Gandhi is shown at her husband’s samadhi: ‘‘Sindoor loota kar apni, ma ne di hai qurbani (a widow and a mother has made a huge sacrifice).’’

These clips will be played throughout the campaign on video vans that have been criss-crossing the country for the last two weeks.

According to Ramesh, the video vans will also be used by Sonia Gandhi during her Jan Sampark Abhiyan. Of one thing, he is sure: ‘‘These video vans are going to have a lot of curiosity value.’’
