British intelligence agents last year secretly filmed suspected July 7 bombing mastermind Mohammed Sidique Khan talking to a terror suspect, but the attacker gave them a slip and proceeded with his plan, according to a joint BBC radio and TV report.
The programme’s makers said that if the information was correct, it would amount to ‘‘a serious failure of intelligence’’ in the run up to the July 7 bombings. ‘‘The new information would show the intelligence services had him well in their sights but allowed him to slip away.’’
It was thought, till now that the plans of Khan, 30, from Dewsbury, West Yorkshire, had remained secret because he and the other bombers had no track record in terrorism and no intelligence services traces, the BBC said.
Meanwhile, suspected “fifth bomber”, Indian-origin Imran Patel (27), has been remanded to custody till Thursday, Scotland Yard said. Patel, who is believed to have had arms training in Pakistan, was arrested after he told the News of the World tabloid on Saturday that he had been lined up to be the fifth bomber in the attack.
Patel said he decided not to be part of the plan when a school, where victims would be children was suggested as a target. However, he did not inform the police of the terrorists’ plans because, the tabloid said, he did not wish to see Muslim “brothers” jailed.
