The Himachal Pradesh High Court today ordered Director General of Police Ajit Narain to set up a three-member panel to look into the charges of irregularities relating to the purchase of properties and bank loans taken by Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) BS Thind in Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh.

A Division Bench comprising Chief Justice VK Gupta and Justice Deepak Gupta passed the orders on a Public Interest petition, which quoted several media reports about Thind’s alleged illegalities, and sought suitable action against the controversial officer.

The petitioner alleged that an officer with such a record of irregularity should not be allowed to occupy the position of the state’s ADGP, law and order.

Thind is also ADGP, CID—a sensitive post.

Acting on the PIL, the Bench asked the DGP to constitute an inquiry committee to be headed by an officer no less than an Aditional DGP. The panel’s report is to be submitted within three weeks, before the case comes up for its next hearing on January 10 2006.

Thind has been facing serious charges of owning properties disproportionate to his known sources of income. He has also been accused of obtaining huge housing loans and defaulting in their repayments. He was once a strong contender for the post of DGP which will fall vacant shortly.
