Dr J J Solanki was appointed as the president of Lions Club of Poona East for the year 1999-2000. He was installed by multiple council chairman, Narendra Bhandari at a function held at Hotel Shree Pancharatna on July 14.
The club has organised two diabetic detection centres. One at 502, Sachapir Street, every Saturday and another one at Mominpura, Ghorpade Peth. every Friday. Here blood tests for diabetes will be done between 10 a.m. and 12 noon free of cost for all.
Farewell to students
On July 15, Rotary Club of Pune Metro organised a farewell party for all the International Youth Exchange (YE) students. Twenty students attended the party. The students will be going to Germany, Japan, Peru, Belgium and Brazil. They will stay with a Rotary family for a year. Similarly students from these countries will come to India next month, for a year. Narendra Dravid, avenue chairman, introduced the students.
Senior citizens celebrate
Senior Citizens’ Welfare Association (SCWA), Mira Society, Salisbury Park, celebrated their first anniversary on July 18. Col M G Athavale, executive president, Association of Senior Citizens Organisations of Pune (ASCOP), apprised the member on the projects undertaken by ASCOP, which is the head of 55 Senior Citizen’s Organisations in Pune. He also said that since the year 1999 is being celebrated as the International Year of the Elderly, ASCOP will be organising a three-day international conference on Gerontology and Geriatrics in December 1999, at Bharati Vidyapeeth, Pune.
The SCWA members put up a variety entertainment programme, followed by lunch. Members in the age group 50-90, belonging to diverse communities, attended the programme.
Taking charge
Kishore Oswal was installed as president of the Rotary Club of Pune Far East for the year 1999-2000 at a function held recently. J P Rane and Santosh Rathod were installed as secretary and treasurer respectively.
Two books, ‘Party Games for the Millennium’ and ‘Daawat’ (recipe book) were released on the same day. The money generated from these books is earmarked for the ‘Rotary Foundation’, a social trust.
Celebrating success
Rotary Club of Pune Riverside celebrated their 10th anniversary and completion of 100 projects during the year 1998-99 at a function organised at Le Meridien. Members and past presidents of the last ten years were felicitated with a silver crest. A computer presentation of 10 years of Rotary Nostalgia was presented. Arun Kudale, DGN, presented a citation to Rohit Jerajani for excelling in all the four avenues of service. This citation has been conferred to the club by Rotary president James Lacy.
Awards for academic excellence
Shri Saaddi (Ranakpur) Jain Sangh, Pune, felicitated a few students who had excelled in their respective academic fields, at their annual convention held on July 11. Kunal Subhash Parmar (ICSE), Kumod Ramesh Kavedia (HSC), Anik Rameshchandra Shah (Bachelor of Horticultural Science), Kapil Kanhaiyalal Baldotta (MBA), Rohit Kavediya (Doctorate of Homeopathic Medicine), along with a few others were honoured with awards.
Dr Kevalchand Hirachand Oswal (Chandaliya), National Science Association, was the guest of honour.Quiz timeOn July 18, the British Library in collaboration with Rotary Club of North-East, Pune, organised a quiz for children.
The contest was held for two age groups, five to nine and 10 to 15. Questions were based on various topics such as History, Music, Literature and Sports. The British Library plans to make this quiz an annual feature and call it `Grey Cells’.
