Voicing concern over continued repression of the press by the Pervez Musharraf regime, the Unesco has warned that such steps would not contribute to either internal peace or development of Pakistan.

“I therefore ask President Pervez Musharraf to lift restrictions on the freedom of media in the country,” Koichiro Matsuura, the Director General of United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation, said.

Noting that 180 journalists have been arrested for demonstrating against censorship, he told Musharraf that the fight against terrorism must “contribute to the defence of democracy, not its erosion”.

The arrests took place during a nationwide protest organised by the Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists. Many protestors were injured during the demonstrations, according to the International Federation of Journalists.
