Fiscal policing

Whether you are a salaried individual or a pensioner, the new 4-page income tax return form, ‘Form 2F’, which replaces the one-page Saral, is bad news. One has now to give details of all investments, all household expenses, cash in hand, cash in bank, loans or gifts etc in the income tax return. This would be much like maintaining a company balance sheet. Besides increasing the pain of vacuous paperwork, this infringes on our civil rights. Even after one’s tax is deducted at source, one needs to tell the government where and how one spends one’s income. This is fiscal policing, which is sure to make the honest taxpayer’s life miserable. Ironically, no effort is being made to bring those who can manipulate their income and evade tax under greater supervision.

Gautam Chikermane is right that “there’s something philosophically and intrinsically wrong” with reference to the introduction of 2F replacing Saral Form (‘Four pages of fear’, IE, June 5). Perhaps, the aam admi, according to the scheme of things of the UPA government, does not pay income tax, so others, particularly the salaried class and pensioners, can be harassed. If this new form is a prelude to expenditure tax, the Union finance ministry should have the honesty to say so. The requirement envisaged in the new form is an intrusion of the extraordinary kind? Either, better sense prevails and ‘Form 2F’ is withdrawn, or the NHRC or the Supreme Court should initiate suo motu action to stop the latest harassment.

Aamir’s ambition

Story continues below this ad

Reacting to the Supreme Court’s decision that the theatre owners in Gujarat who would like to exhibit the Aamir Khan starrer can seek police protection is in tune with the statement the state CM already made long back, but Aamir should know that it is the voluntary decision by the threatre owners there not to exhibit the film, because they are hurt by his statement on Narmada Dam. “I am not interested in getting into politics,” says the actor as reported recently in the media, but his body language and statements are evidence to the contrary.

Touring Kashmir

Bhawana Somaaya’s ‘Kashmir on the mind’ was very good reading, which delineated the breathtaking beauty of Kashmir through the songs and shots of Bollywood movies, but there is no

evidence that the attacks on tourist were terrorist attacks, even the terrorists themselves have condemned these attacks. Most of the people associated with tourism one way or the other are aware that these attacks had to do with the rivalry among tour operators of various states. The Mumbai tour operator who was killed was also the victim of this rivalry like the tourists who were killed in the recent attacks.

BJP’s Rahul

Rahul Mahajan’s drug abuse case has once again proved to be a mirror held to high society and Indian politics. What has also come to the fore is the BJP’s handling of the incident. Till a few days back Rahul was touted as the next best thing to have happened in the BJP. And now the party distances itself. Some top BJP leaders want the incident to be overlooked, citing Rahul as a victim of bad company at young age. Would they said the same if it was a member of the Gandhi family?
