MUMBAI, FEB 7: The governor said the success of events, especially the Fleet review by the President of India on February 17 and the city parade review by the Prime Minister on February 18, would to a large extent depend upon good visibilty.
“If the atmosphere is hazy and murky, people would not be able to see the ships and aircraft and would, therefore, not be able to enjoy the grand spectacle. if the visibility is very poor, the spectacular fly past by many aircraft will have to be cancelled,” he said in a release.
Pointing to the facts placed by the Regional office of the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board, Mumbai, that vehicular traffic and industries were the major sources of pollution in the metropolis, Alexander called for reducing the traffic and industrial pollution level in the city on February 15, 16 and 17 by avoiding use of vehicles from February 15-18 or trying out the car-pool method.
Closing down industrial units on these days and carrying out maintenance work, using public transport instead of personal vehicles, avoiding burning of garbage and minimising use of vehicles for shopping were the other suggestions put forward for reducing pollution.
