Ambala: The 8 to 10 per cent levy on acrylic yarn has put pressure on the traders. The General Merchants Association president Vishwa Prakash Walia and general secretary Ram Prakash Gupta in a memorandum addressed to the commercial taxation commissioner have sought that the dealers be assessed at 2 per cent as per the practice since October 1995 till September 1997 and should be extended to give relief the dealers whose business depended on the item.

The memorandum demanded a uniform tax to bring Haryana at par with Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Chandigarh, Himachala Pradesh and Rajasthan and to lower it to the extent of 50 per cent for better recovery of revenue. The measure, it added would stall diversion of business to other states if the state government reduced the taxes equal to other states. The memo also urged the state government to arrange timely issuance of the ST forms, which were not readily available in the sales tax offices.
