Tragedy struck commuters on busy Shakarpur road after a Delhi Metro steel span and launcher came crashing down. Several people in cars and in a Blueline bus were seriously injured. Some of the victims admitted at Lok Nayak Hospital might not be able to walk properly without support even after recovery. While Blueline driver Surender Pal Singh, 28, was declared dead on arrival at Lok Nayak, another person, Hari Singh Meera, 22, is in a serious condition. Meera’s right leg had to be amputated.

Doctors at Lok Nayak also had to amputate the left foot of another victim, Dhano Mahto, also 22. Sivesh, 19, has both legs paralysed after spinal injury.

“Meera’s condition is critical. His right leg had to be amputated above the knee and his left leg also suffered a fracture. He is under strict observation,” Dr Arun Bahl from Lok Nayak told Newsline. Four more people were admitted to the hospital with moderate injuries. These include Ramnarayan Yadav, 28, Vinod, 35; Karan Singh, 40; Dhir Mandal, 48. “We have already operated upon the injured. The other patients are doing fine,” Dr Bahl said. Sivesh, paralysed waist-down, after sustaining spinal injuries is also under observation. “Sivesh is not able to move his legs. We can’t say whether this will be a permanent condition. He may be able to move his legs after some time,” said a doctor on duty.
