Left-UPA tussle only a mock fight, says BJP

Ridiculing the Left’s decision to stay away from coordination committee meetings with the UPA while continuing support to the Manmohan Singh government, the BJP today described the move as a ‘‘mock fight’’ that was ‘‘guided by strategy rather than conviction.’’

Commenting on the latest friction in Left-UPA relations, BJP general secretary Arun Jaitley said it only reinforced the fact that the UPA was a very ‘‘fragile coalition’’, which was bound by the glue of ‘‘anti-BJPism’’ and not the Common Minimum Programme.

Asserting that the Left’s ‘‘credibility is suspect’’, Jaitley said the real test of its intentions would take place when the next session of Parliament begins on July 25. The way the Left voted on issues affecting the aam aadmi would show whether it was genuinely concerned for the poor or in keeping the coalition afloat, he said.

Describing the Left-UPA tussle as a ‘‘mock fight’’, Jaitley also pointed out that the Left parties had boycotted the UPA’s first anniversary celebrations but at the same time sent a letter congratulating the alliance and reassuring it of their support.

Jaitley said the reason behind the Left’s latest decision was that ‘‘the UPA government is becoming a liability’’ and the Left wanted to distance itself from the government’s failures in public.

The Left would continue its informal interactions with the UPA even as it stayed away from official meetings, he claimed.
